Test Criteria

At Hohenstein, the UV protection is tested in the form of the UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of textiles.

UPF allows an evaluation of UV protection provided by textiles. It considers the spectral composition of sunlight and human skin sensitivities.

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of textiles can be assessed according to the Australia-New Zealand standard (AS/NZS 4399), the European standard (DIN EN 13758-1) and/or the American standard (AATCC TM 183).

These standards describe UV protective properties of textiles in new and unused state. Classifications depend on the level of UPF detected: UPF 15, 30, 50 or 50+.

FACTSHEET: TEXTILE UV PROTECTION

AS/NZS 4399

UV protection per AS/NZS 4399

AS/NZS 4399 is used to determine the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of textiles and similar materials (e.g. protective films) in a new condition, without real usage.

Appropriate for:

  • Clothing textiles
  • Similar materials

Testing to determine UPF:

  • Solar spectrum: Melbourne, Australia on January 1st (high summer)
  • New, unstretched and dry materials
  • Most sensitive skin type
  • To make the claim on the entrire garment, additional testing is required

Certification:

  • The quality label is issued upon conclusion of successful testing and valid contract
  • Classification is in the UPF levels 15, 30, 50 or 50+ and refers exclusively to the material
  • Depending on the product, modifications are possible, e.g. with regard to pretreatments

EU PPE Regulation

Submit samples for testing:

  • At least 50 cm x 50 cm of each material and color, taken across the entire (or at least half of) the product width
  • For certification, a finished product sample or sketch of each finished product
  • Shipping address:

DEVELOP PRODUCTS TO AS/NZS 4399

DIN EN 13758-1

UV protection per DIN EN 13758-1

DIN EN 13758-1 is used to determine the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of textiles and similar materials (e.g. protective films) in a new and dry condition, without real usage.

Appropriate for:

  • Clothing textiles
  • Similar materials

Testing to determine UPF:

  • Solar spectrum: Albuquerque, New Mexico (approximate to the solar spectrum of Southern Europe)
  • New, unstretched and dry materials
  • The requirements of DIN EN 13758-2 are not used in the testing program for the Hohenstein quality label

Certification:

  • The quality label is issued upon conclusion of successful testing and valid contract
  • Label is issued solely on the material test as per DIN EN 13758-1 and modified classification as per AS/NZS 4399 with the levels UPF 15, 30, 50 or 50+
  • Depending on the product, modifications are possible, e.g. with regard to pretreatments

DEVELOP PRODUCTS TO DIN EN 13758-1

AATCC TM 183

UV protection per AATCC TM 183

AATCC TM 183 is used to determine the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of textiles and similar materials (e.g. protective films) in a new condition, without real usage.
We test to this standard, but do not offer a Hohenstein Quality Label.

Appropriate for:

  • Clothing textiles
  • Similar materials

Testing to determine UPF:

  • Solar spectrum: Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • For critical observation reasons, the calculation from AS/MZS 4399 is used to evaluate the material. The material is then classified on the basis of ASTM D 6603 using the levels UPF 15, 30, 50 or 50+
  • The test of other states of use as per AATCC TM 183 and the remaining requirements of ASTM D 6603 are not applicable
  • Certification is not possible as the requirements for the labeling process as per ASTM D 6603 are not covered in full

Submit samples for testing:

  • At least 50 cm x 50 cm of each material and color, taken across the entire (or at least half of) the product width
